In the midst of an ongoing legislative fight over how to avoid deep, automatic cuts to defense and domestic spending program set to kick in early next year, the progressive advocacy group Credo Action is working to derail a House GOP effort to replace the cuts to the Pentagon with deep cuts to the social safety net. House Republicans have passed a sweeping budget reconciliation bill reneging the debt ceiling deal to cut military spending. It increases an already bloated Pentagon budget and pays for it by taking away funding for food stamps, wiping out key parts of the federal health care law including health care for children, and slashes funding designated to reign in Wall Street.
