President George H.W. Bush took his longtime love of whimsical socks to the next level on Tuesday by sporting a pair that featured his own face.

The sock portraits were revealed to the world on Wednesday when Jim McGrath, a spokesman for Bush, tweeted a picture of the former President wearing his face on his ankles the day before as he accepted an award named for President Lyndon Johnson.

McGrath told TPM the socks were mailed to Bush by “a Canadian citizen in Markham, Ontario.” According to McGrath, there was “no special reason” the Canadian artiste, who McGrath did not name, sent the socks to Bush.
