Incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Tester is up two points over challenger Rep. Denny Rehberg in the Montana Senate race, according to the latest Public Policy Polling survey released Sunday. Tester leads Rehberg 48 percent to 46 percent, largely due to a lead among independents and a much higher personal popularity.
Tester’s approval rating is tight, with 47 percent approving of him and 46 percent disapproving. But that’s much better than Rehberg, who has a 37 percent approval versus 54 percent of voters who disapprove of his performance. The poll found Tester up 13 points among independents.
PPP’s last four polls have all shown Tester with a 2-point lead in what will likely be one of the closest Senate races this cycle.
PPP surveyed 836 likely voters in Montana on Nov. 2-3. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 3.4 percentage points.
