A Public Policy Polling (D) survey out Tuesday of new swing state North Carolina shows President Obama up by one in a potential matchup with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The numbers show Obama’s approval rating nearly even at 47 – 49, and Romney solidly disliked with a 34 percent favorability rating versus 48 percent. But independent voters in the state break hard toward Romney in the actual vote, and Obama even loses some wayward Democrats.

PPP also polled the contest with Libertarian candidate former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson in the race, which gives Obama the win in the poll. “North Carolina continues to look like it will be one of the closest states in the country this year,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “And that means every little thing, like a stronger than usual Libertarian candidate, could make the difference.”

The current TPM Poll Average of the Obama—Romney matchup in North Carolina shows the President with a tiny .4 percent lead.
