A “weak field is keeping [Sen. Claire] McCaskill in the game,” according to new numbers from Public Policy Polling (D). McCaskill’s approval rating is only at 42 percent among Missourians, against 49 percent who disapprove. “Things literally could not be any closer in Claire McCaskill’s bid for reelection,” PPP wrote in its analysis. “In PPP’s latest survey of the race, the freshman Missouri Senator ties each of her three prospective Republican opponents at 43%.”

The good news for Democrats is that none of her opponents are either well known or viewed favorably. The GOP candidate voters are most aware of is former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who is seen favorably by 22 percent and unfavorably by 24. “Claire McCaskill’s definitely one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the country,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling in a release. “What’s helping her out is that the Republican candidate field isn’t very strong either. This is looking like a toss up race much like the one McCaskill had when she was first elected in 2006.”
