After a two-day conclave, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio emerged on the central balcony at St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday as the newly elected pope, greeting the throngs of supporters gathered at the Vatican and providing a blessing.
The archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio is the first Latin American and first Jesuit to become pope. He has chosen the name Pope Francis.
