Utah’s lone Democratic member of Congress, Rep. Jim Matheson, has a solid lead over his Republican opponent, Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love, according to a new poll.

The survey by Utah-based pollster Dan Jones, commissioned by the Deseret News, shows Matheson leading Love 53 percent to 38 percent. The survey of 379 registered voters was conducted June 15-21, and has a 5.1 percent margin of error.

If elected, Love would be the first black Republican woman in Congress.

Matheson was first elected to Congress in 2000, and has repeatedly won re-election despite running in districts that have strongly favored Republicans for president and other offices. He comes from a legacy political family in Utah: His father was governor, and his brother was the Democratic nominee for governor in 2004.
