Democrat Terry McAuliffe leads tea party-party favorite Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia’s attorney general, 46 percent to 41 percent in Virginia’s race for governor, according to a new survey from Public Policy Polling released Tuesday.

According to PPP, this is due to Cuccinelli’s low popularity:

The story of the race at this point is really how unpopular Cuccinelli is. Only 29% of voters have a favorable opinion of him to 45% with a negative one. Even among Republicans there are significant doubts about him- only 48% see him favorably with a much higher than normal 23% of voters within his own party seeing him negatively.

PPP surveyed 602 Virginia voters between Jan. 4-6, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
