Slightly fewer Virginia voters have trust in embattled Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) than earlier this summer, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.

The poll showed that 42 percent of voters believe the Republican is honest and trustworthy, while 41 percent said he is not. A month ago, Quinnipiac found 44 percent of commonwealth voters who called McDonnell honest and trustworthy while 36 percent said he was not.

McDonnell’s relationship with Jonnie Williams, the CEO of dietary supplements maker Star Scientific, has been the subject of a federal probe. The legal team for the governor met with prosecutors Monday in an effort to avoid charges.

Meanwhile, increased scrutiny has been paid to McDonnell’s wife, Maureen McDonnell, who confirmed late last week that she purchased thousands of dollars worth of stock in Star Scientific around the time that Williams was providing financial gifts to Virginia’s first family.
