Former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson would have a huge lead in the general election for Senate in Wisconsin, a new poll from Republican-leaning Rasmussen shows.
Thompson leads the presumptive Democratic nominee, Rep. Tammy Baldwin, 52 percent to 36 percent. The survey of 500 likely voters was conducted June 12, and has a 4.5 percent margin of error. The TPM Poll Average currently gives Thompson 51.9 percent, compared with Baldwin’s 36.1 percent.
But Thompson still faces a four-way Republican primary in August. With Baldwin tested against the other candidates in the Republican primary, the race is much closer: Former Rep. Mark Neumann leads Baldwin 45 percent to 43 percent; Baldwin leads state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald 44 percent to 43 percent; and venture capitalist Eric Hovde leads Baldwin 44 percent to 42 percent.
