Is former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson leading in the Republican Senate primary? It depends on who you ask — a new poll from Marquette Law School released Wednesday found him leading businessman Eric Hovde. A separate survey released Tuesday showed Hovde with the upper hand.

The Marquette poll shows Thompson with 35 percent, and Hovde with 23 percent, followed by former Rep. Mark Neumann with 10 percent and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald with 6 percent. The survey of 432 likely Republican primary voters was conducted July 5-8, and has a 4.8 percent margin of error.

Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling on Tuesday showed Hovde grabbing a narrow lead against Thompson. Marquette polling director Charles Franklin writes: “We differ on the size of the gains but agree on the momentum currently demonstrated by the Hovde campaign.”

The PollTracker Average currently shows Thompson ahead with 32.7 percent, Hovde at 27.7 percent, Neumann 13.7 percent, and Fitzgerald 7.3 percent.
