A new poll found that on the eve of the first anniversary of last year’s elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., support for stricter gun-control laws has dropped to its lowest level since the tragedy.
An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Friday found that 52 percent of Americans support stricter laws covering firearms sales. Thirty-eight percent said gun laws should remain the same, while 8 percent said they want less strict measures.
In contrast, NBC/WSJ polls found that support for stricter gun-control measures was at 61 percent in February and at 55 back in April, when the Senate debated gun-control legislation that ultimately failed to pass.
A CNN/ORC International poll released last week also found the momentum for stricter gun control had faded, with public opinion on tougher gun-control measures sharply split.
