This year’s gubernatorial race in Virginia looks like a toss-up, according to a new poll released Wednesday morning.

The latest NBC News/Marist poll showed little daylight between Republican state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Among registered Commonwealth voters, McAuliffe, the former top Hillary Clinton aide, edged Cuccinelli 43 percent to 41 percent. But among the narrower sample of likely voters, Cuccinelli claimed a 45 percent to 42 percent advantage.

The NBC/Marist poll showed a much tighter race than a poll released last week by The Washington Post. In that poll, Cuccinelli’s 5-point lead among registered voters grew to 10 points among likely voters. The NBC/Marist poll was conducted April 28-May 2 using live phone interviews with 1,095 registered voters with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

The PollTracker Average shows the Republican currently boasting a nearly 7-point lead and gaining separation from McAuliffe.
