A poll released Thursday suggested that Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) is poised for a landslide victory in next week’s special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts.

The latest UMass Lowell-Boston Herald found the Democratic congressman comfortably outpacing Republican businessman Gabriel Gomez among likely Bay State voters, 56 percent to 36 percent.

Markey has consistently led in the polls, with a growing number conducted this month showing him up by double-digits. The only polls that have shown a competitive race have been those conducted on behalf of Gomez’s campaign or conservative organizations.

In an email sent this morning to supporters requesting a contribution of “$5 or more” to go toward a $250,000 goal, Sarah Benzing, Markey’s campaign manager, highlighted a Gomez internal poll released this week that showed the Democrat leading by seven.

“Our opponent’s internal polling still shows this as a single-digit race,” Benzing said. “In a special election, with under a week left, we cannot take any chances.”

The PollTracker Average shows Markey with a solid lead ahead of the June 25 election.
