The new Public Policy Polling (D) survey of Massachusetts finds President Obama with a landslide lead over Mitt Romney, whose previous elected office was as governor of the same heavily Democratic state.

The numbers: Obama 58%, Romney 35%. Obama also leads Rick Santorum by 61%-29%, leads Newt Gingrich by 62%-28%, and leads Ron Paul by 58%-30%.

Obama’s approval rating in the state is 57%-38%. In contrast, Romney’s favorable rating is a mirror opposite 37%, and 57% unfavorable — but at the same time, a 48% plurality say they approve of the job that Romney did as governor, to 40% who disapprove.

Massachusetts has only voted Republican for president twice in the past 50 years, in the national landslides for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.
