President Obama leads the state of Michigan by 2.7 percent, according to a poll released Tuesday night conducted by the Glengariff Group and commissioned by The Detroit News. Obama gets 47.7 percent and Republican candidate Mitt Romney sees 45 percent of likely voters. The poll comes as the Obama campaign started running its first ads of the race in Michigan, after pro-Romney super PAC Restore Out Future started running spots in the state. From The Detroit News:
Obama surged in Michigan to a double-digit lead after the Democratic National Convention that put a spotlight on the rescue of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Inc., and on women’s health, but the president’s lead dwindled following a listless first debate with the Republican that voters here deemed a clear Romney win.
Based on his three debate performances and an appeal to the middle of the electorate, poll respondents gave Romney a second look. “He became a viable alternative,” [Glengariff Group Pollster Richard ] Czuba said.
