A majority of Americans support allowing working illegal immigrants in the United States to remain in the country, either as a guest worker or with a path to citizenship, a CBS News poll released Monday finds.

Fifty-one percent of Americans believe working illegal immigrants should be allowed to remain in the U.S. and apply for citizenship, including two in three Democrats but just a third of Republicans. An additional 20 percent of Americans believe they should be able to stay as guest workers.

Conducted Jan. 24 – 27, the poll of 1,052 adults and has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points for the total sample.
