A bipartisan group of senators has offered a proposal to overhaul the nation’s immigration system, but new poll numbers out Friday indicated that the public has little confidence that the two parties will work together to pass the legislation.

The poll from Quinnipiac University found that 71 percent of American voters do not think Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill “will be able to work together to pass comprehensive immigration reform this year.” Only about a quarter said that the two sides will be able to cooperate and get something passed.

The lack of public confidence spans the partisan spectrum, too, although Democrats are slightly more optimistic than Republicans. A mere 17 percent of Republicans said that the two parties will be able to pass immigration reform, compared with 78 percent who said they will not.  One-third of Democrats, on the other hand, said that the parties will be able to pass an immigration bill this year, while 61 percent said they will not.
