Democrats are more likely to approve of John Roberts as chief justice of the Supreme Court, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University.

Roberts was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2005, and has had a conservative record during his tenure. But the latest numbers likely reflect the impact of Roberts’ decision to uphold President Obama’s health care reform law.

Roberts’ approval rating is 46 percent, compared with 34 percent who disapprove. Democrats approve of Roberts 62 percent to 19 percent, while among Republicans only 31 percent approve and 51 percent disapprove. Independents approve of Roberts 46 percent to 32 percent. The survey 2,722 registered voters was conducted from July 1-8, and has a 1.9 percent margin of error.
