A new Rasmussen poll of the Nebraska Senate race, conducted soon after this week’s Republican primary, gives GOP state Sen. Deb Fischer a huge lead over the Democratic nominee, former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson.

Fischer leads Kerrey 56 percent to 38 percent. The survey of 500 likely voters was conducted on Wednesday, March 16, the day after Tuesday’s primary, and has a 4.5 percent margin of error. In a previous poll from early March by Rasmussen, a Republican-leaning firm, Fischer led Kerrey 46 percent to 34 percent.

Fischer won her primary in an upset, after having run in third place in polls for most of the race. The previous frontrunner had been state Attorney General Jon Bruning, who had become caught up in attacks with rival Don Stenberg, allowing Fischer to quickly rise up in the final two weeks of the campaign.
