A slight plurality of Americans believe that Republicans in Congress are more to blame than their Democratic counterparts for the automatic spending cuts that went into effect last week, according to the latest CBS News poll released Monday evening.

Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they blame the congressional GOP for the failure to reach a deal before last Friday’s sequestration deadline, compared with 33 percent who said they blame President Barack Obama and Democrats in Congress.

In a telling reflection of the gridlock that typifies Washington, the poll found members of the two parties blaming the other side for the inability to strike a deal. Sixty-nine percent of Republicans said they blame Obama and the Democrats, while 72 percent of Democrats blamed Republicans on Capitol Hill.
