By a wide margin, American voters oppose lawmakers signing a pledge not to raise taxes on the wealthy, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. By 85 percent to 10 percent, voters say it’s a bad idea to “sign a pledge to an anti-tax group to never raise taxes on corporations or the wealthy.” Republicans oppose doing so by a similar margin of 77 percent to 15 percent.

Many Republicans in Congress have signed a pledge by Grover Norquist’s group Americans for Tax Reform to oppose tax increases of all kinds. The poll did not specifically ask about Norquist’s pledge.

Conducted Nov. 28 – Dec. 3, the poll surveyed 1,949 registered voters and has a margin of error of +/- 2.2 percentage points.
