One of the most closely watched political stories of the year among reporters — the Wisconsin recall election — did not captivate the overall American public in the same way, a new Pew poll suggests.

The poll finds that 21 percent followed the election very closely, followed by 17 percent who followed it fairly closely. Another 14 percent followed it “not too closely” and 46 percent did not follow the election at all. Republicans were more likely to have followed it very closely, at 31 percent, compared with only 20 percent each among Democrats and independents.

Outranking the attention to Wisconsin are the 2012 presidential election, which 30 percent are following very closely, and the U.S. economy, which is being followed closely by 35 percent. The survey of 1,000 American adults was conducted from June 7-10, and has a 3.6 percent margin of error.
