Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Andrew Smith said at a press conference Tuesday that authorities prefer to take Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop suspected of killing three people, into custody alive. However, Smith said the first priority is the safety of everyone in the area.

A man resembling Dorner took cover Tuesday afternoon in a cabin near Big Bear, Calif., where he engaged in a gun battle with police.
