Police in Arlington County, Va, announced on Thursday they were launching a criminal investigation into the son of Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA).

Patrick Moran, 23, resigned from his father’s campaign on Wednesday after conservative activist James O’Keefe released a video showing him offering advice to an undercover videographer who claimed to want to commit voter fraud.

The younger Moran told TPM and other media outlets that he only went along with the plan because he believed the man was joking. “In retrospect, I should have just walked away, making it clear that there is no place in the electoral process for even the suggestion of illegal behavior, joking or not,” he said in an emailed statement.
