A statement released Friday by the family of South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius and his management disputed the murder charges brought against the double-amputee track athlete “in the strongest terms,” the Associated Press reported.

The statement came on the same day prosecutors formally brought charges of premediated murder against Pistorius, who is being accused of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius, who became the first double amputee to compete in Olympic track events at the 2012 London summer games, reportedly wept as prosecutors announced the charges.

“The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms,” the statement, which was issued from London, read. Friday’s statement also said that the 26-year-old Pistorius “would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva,” according to the AP.
