When it comes to views of abortion, residents of New England and the south are nearly diametrically opposed, according to new findings released Monday by Pew Research Center.

Seventy-five percent of New Englanders (individuals in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, compared with just 20 percent who said it should be illegal in most or all cases. Compare those findings to the views of respondents in the “South Central” region — Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas — where 52 percent believe abortion should be illegal in most or all cases, while 40 percent said it should be legal in most or all cases.

At least 50 percent of respondents in every region save for the aforementioned “South Central” and the Midwest said they support legal abortion. . Midwesterners (respondents in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota) were evenly split on the question: 47 percent said they support legal abortion while 47 percent said they think it should be made illegal.

Fifty-four percent of Americans overall support legal abortion, while just 40 percent said it should be illegal.
