The American public widely backs the Pentagon’s decision to lift the military’s ban on women serving in ground combat units, according to a poll from Pew Research Center released Tuesday.
Sixty-six percent of respondents said they support allowing women to serve in combat, while 26 percent said they are opposed. Pew noted that an ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted two years ago showed a similar level of support for lifting the ban.
Pew’s poll showed that the public is evenly split on what the policy change represents for the military: 47 percent said it is a major change, while another 47 percent called it only a minor change. A firm majority of 58 percent said will make for better opportunities for women serving in the military.
