Former Rep. Pete Hoekstra has won the Republican primary for Senate in Michigan, and will go up against Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in November.

With 36 percent of precincts reporting, Hoekstra has 54 percent of the vote, compared with 33 percent for former state Board of Education President Clark Durant, according to the Associated Press.

Hoekstra took a series of controversial steps during the primary, such as running a racially charged ad about China and the national debt, and his call for a national commission to approve the birth certificates of presidential candidates.

Stabenow goes into the general as the favorite over Hoekstra. The PollTracker Average currently shows Stabenow with 49.6 percent support, compared with 37.4 percent for Hoekstra.
