Slate’s Dave Weigel tweets out from a Rick Perry event in South Carolina that the flailing Republican presidential candidate said, “we don’t need a lighter version of Obama.”

The Texas Governor was talking policy, not race, attacking Mitt Romney for being allegedly being too ideologically similar to President Obama. However, it’s an unfortunate phrasing that reminds one of how Rick Santorum also made a similar remark that could easily be taken out of context.

Also on the ground in South Carolina, Santorum said, “We need contrasts, not just a paler shade of what we have.”
