President Obama’s lead in Pennsylvania is down to 3 points, although he’s still near 50 percent according to a new poll commissioned by in-state newspaper the Morning Call and conducted by Muhlenberg College. Obama sees 49 percent overall while Republican candidate Mitt Romney is at 46 percent, tightening slightly from two weeks ago when Muhlenberg found the president at 50 percent and Romney at 45 percent.
But in the end, the pollster said a closer race doesn’t mean Romney should start celebrating. From the Morning Call:
Still, in Pennsylvania, it’s a climb for Romney to move those final points, says Muhlenberg College pollster Chris Borick.
“When you see poll results like ours you see it’s a very competitive race in Pennsylvania,” Borick said. “With the polls showing Obama with a 3-6 point lead, the question remains what is the Republican recipe to erase that? Even though it’s on the low end that’s still a challenge of hundreds of thousands of votes that Romney has to find. Can that combination emerge from better than expected performance in the Philly burbs? Possible, but not probable.”
The president retains the overall advantage in the PollTracker Average of Pennsylvania.
The Muhlenberg poll used 430 live telephone interviews with likely Pennsylvania voters conducted Nov. 1-3. It has a sampling error of 5 percent.
