Oracle has won a partial victory in its long, hard-fought copyright infringement trial against Google. A jury in San Francisco found that Google’s use of Oracle’s Java application programming interface (API) in Google’s massively popular Android mobile devices constituted copyright infringment, Ars Technica reported Monday afternoon.
However, the jury remained deadlocked on whether or not Google’s use of Oracle’s Java API in Android constituted “fair use,” under U.S. Copyright Law (the doctrine that states that copyrighted work may be used without permission or license in some cases, such as for educational or criticism purposes).
Without that, it will be difficult for Oracle to win the roughly $1 billion in damages it was seeking from Google, The Wall Street Journal points out. Google’s attorney has already stated his intention to file for a mistrial on Thursday, ZDNet reports.
