Yoko Ono’s notably entry into the debate over gun violence got the attention of President Barack Obama’s team.

In several tweets on Wednesday, Ono lamented the number of gun-related deaths in the United States. “We are turning this beautiful country into a war zone,” she wrote in one.

All of the tweets contained a banner with a photo of the glasses worn by Lennon when he was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. The picture served as the cover art for her 1981 album, “Season of Glass.”

“Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980,” the caption on the banner read.

Ono re-wrote the banner’s copy in one of the tweets, which was then shared with Obama’s more than 28 million Twitter followers. The @BarackObama Twitter account is now handled by Organizing for Action, the nonprofit group born out of the President’s campaign operation.
