President Obama called NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover control team this morning to congratulate them on their successful landing on the surface of Mars, and had a little fun in the process.

“We can’t wait to start hearing back from Curiosity and finding out what’s going on,” Obama said, via livestream. “If in fact you make contact with Martians, please let me know right away.”

“Even if they’re just microbes, it’ll be pretty exciting,” Obama added.

Obama gushed about the incredibly technical aspects of the mission – including the 500,000 lines of software code required by the project and the sophisticated Skycrane system which lowered Curiosity to the surface.

“It’s really what makes us best as a species — the curiosity we have, learning to discover, the pushing boundaries of knowledge,” Obama said.
