President Obama urged the nation’s governors on Monday to lobby their counterparts in Congress to ensure sequestration does not take place come March 1.

“Here’s the thing: these cuts don’t have to happen,” Obama said at a National Governors Association meeting at the White House. “Congress can turn them off anytime with just a little compromise.”

Obama pledged to work with Republicans on “modest reforms in Medicare” as part of an effort to replace the automatic budget cuts due to take effect in less than a week.

“I’ve made that committment,” Obama added.
