President Obama said at a news conference Monday that spending cuts alone are not enough to fix the country’s deficit problem.

“We can’t finish the job of deficit reduction through spending cuts alone,” he said.

Obama said Monday that the U.S. needs a balanced approach that includes closing tax loopholes for the wealthy while allowing small adjustments to health care programs like Medicare, and claimed that the American people are on his side.

“Turns out the american people agree with me,” the president said. “They listened to an entire year’s debate on this issue.”
