President Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are tied a 48 percent a piece in a new poll of North Carolina from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling.

Romney takes 54 percent of independent voters and is chipping away at the president’s base in the state — the former governor gets 19 percent of Democrats while only losing 9 percent of Republicans to Obama. Independents also favor Romney on the question of who’s better to handle the economy by 22 points. But the Democratic registration advantage in the state allows the president to pull even overall. From PPP’s analysis:

Democrats in North Carolina are feeling more excitement about the campaign at this point than Republicans are. 69% say they’re ‘very excited’ about voting this fall compared to 58% of GOP voters. Beyond that 80% of African Americans and 75% of voters under 30 said they were ‘very excited’ about voting. Those are the groups that fueled Obama’s surprise North Carolina victory in 2008 so their continued excitement bodes very well for his ability to do it again.

The president has a tiny 0.6 percent lead in the PollTracker Average of the race in North Carolina.
