President Barack Obama on Tuesday placed a phone call to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to discuss North Korea’s latest nuclear test, according to a White House pool report.

The report indicated that both leaders condemned the test as a “highly provocative violation” of North Korea’s international obligations and agreed that the two sides should continue to work closely together to halt the nuclear program. Obama also reiterated that the United States is committed to the defense of South Korea.
