Speaking at the University of North Carolina on Tuesday, President Obama got personal on his and Michelle’s student loan debt. Obama reiterated that he and Michelle were not born wealthy but got ahead by receiving an education.

“I didn’t just get a policy briefing on this,” Obama said. “Michelle and I, we’ve been in your shoes. Like I said, we didn’t come from wealthy families. So when we graduated from college and law school we had a mountain debt. When we married, we got poorer together.”

He goes on:

Check this out, all right. I’m the president of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. That wasn’t that long ago. And that wasn’t easy especially because when we had our kids we were supposed to be saving up for their college education and we’re still paying off our college education.
