Obama administration officials who served in key posts on the night of the deadly Benghazi, Libya attacks last year say that mistakes made in responding to the incident reflect “incompetence rather than malice or cover up.”

“We’re portrayed by Republicans as either being lying or idiots,” an anonymous official who was part of the Benghazi response tells CBS News. “It’s actually closer to us being idiots.”

Officials also expressed regret at not sending an emergency support team on the night of the attack that led to the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other U.S. citizens.

CBS News reported on Thursday that Republicans doctored leaked Benghazi emails to blame the administration for the removal of references to terrorism in talking points used by aides and lawmakers following the attack.
