Speaking at a fundraiser in New York Monday evening, President Obama described his recent decision to support same-sex marriage as in line with the over-arching message of fairness that runs through his campaign, reports First Read.

The president said that the basic theme of his campaign is “the basic idea that I want everybody treated fairly in this country.”

“We have never gone wrong when we expanded rights and responsibilities to everybody,” Obama continued. “That doesn’t weaken families, it strengthens families.”

The president spoke to a crowd of 200, including celebrities Ricky Martin and Eva Longoria, a bundler for the campaign, at the Rubin Museum of Art. Martin as well as the DNC’s LGBT Leadership Council helped host the event.
