Seeking to build trust and dialogue between gun control advocates and those that resist any new legislation aiming to curb gun violence, President Obama on Wednesday recalled how his wife, Michelle, once remarked that she understood the need for security, particularly in rural areas.

“Part of the reason it is so hard to get done is because both sides may not listen to each other,” Obama said at an event in Denver, Colorado. “The people who take absolute positions on both sides — they won’t concede an inch of ground. I told the story of two conversations I had, when Michelle did some campaigning and she had been to a county with a lot of farmland. She said, if I was at a farm in Iowa, I’d want a gun, too. Somebody just drives up in your driveway and you’re not home. You don’t know how long it will take for [police] to respond.”
