President Obama focused on the problem of human trafficking in both the United States and around the world in his speech at the annual Clinton Global Initiative in New York Tuesday.

“I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name — modern slavery,” Obama said. “I do not use that word slavery lightly because it evokes one of the most painful chapters in our nation’s history.”

Obama detailed steps the United States would take to crack down on human trafficking in the United States including a new assessment of trafficking in the U.S., strengthening training for law enforcement, working with embrace and bus and truck inspectors and doing more to help survivors rebuild their lives.
