President Obama placed a call to the New York University medical center to thank the staff for the evacuation effort during superstorm Sandy, according to a White House pool report. When a back-up power system at NYU Langone Medical Center failed during the storm, the staff oversaw the evacuation of over 200 patients to nearby hospitals.

The story is an example of how “Americans come together” in times like these, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.
