The editorial board of the New York Times on Tuesday issued a stinging indictment of the Obama administration following a report that the Justice Department conducted sweeping surveillance on Fox News reporter James Rosen.

In the piece, the Times asserted that the Rosen case is the latest sign that the administration has “gone overboard in its zeal to find and muzzle insiders,” pointing to the recent revelation that the Justice Department seized Associated Press phone records as another example.

“With the decision to label a Fox News television reporter a possible “co-conspirator” in a criminal investigation of a news leak, the Obama administration has moved beyond protecting government secrets to threatening fundamental freedoms of the press to gather news,” the piece reads.
