Beginning in April, non-subscribers of the New York Times will be able to access 10 free articles on the newspaper’s website, rather than 20 as they can now, according to a company announcement.

Here’s New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.’s memo to staff, per Politico’s Dylan Byers:

Dear Colleagues … Today we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the launch of The New York Times digital subscription packages. As outlined in the press release, one year following launch we have approximately 454,000 paid subscribers to The New York Times Media Group’s various digital subscription packages, e-readers and replica editions.

This is truly a cause for celebration as nearly half a million people are now paying for digital content from The Times and the IHT. We know that our readers place a high value on our journalism, and we will continue to invest in and evolve our journalism and our products across the Company to provide them with trustworthy news, information and entertainment for many years to come.

We also announced today that The Times will be moving the pay gate at NYTimes.com to 10 free articles a month from 20, beginning in April. We will still allow for a generous amount of free content on the Web site and across our digital platforms. If you have not done so already, we encourage each of you to link your account for free digital access. You can link your account and activate your free employee digital subscription here.
