The National Republican Senatorial Committee has a new web video in the open-seat Maine Senate race, already going after independent former Gov. Angus King — and accusing the Democrats of colluding with him and forcing out other candidates.

It is widely assumed that King might be more friendly to Democrats if he is elected to the Senate, though he himself has said he will not declare with whom he would caucus. This week, Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree announced that she would not run, fearing that she and King might split the non-Republican vote.

“‘Independent” Angus King? But who dragged him into the race for Senate — Chuck Schumer and the Democrats?” the announcer says. “Did they shove aside more liberal candidates, who could have a harder time at winning, like fellow Democrat Chellie Pingree? Betraying their principles to ensure King would caucus with the Democrats, to ensure their own power. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire — Maine deserves better than smoke-filled back room deals.”
