Nokia has filed legal complaints with courts in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., asking them to enforce an earlier arbitration ruling issued in Stockholm that would block Research In Motion, the company that makes the BlackBerry line of smartphones and mobile devices, from selling its products in those countries until it resolves a royalties dispute, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Nokia is seeking to extract royalty payments from RIM over Nokia’s patented 802.11 wireless local area network standard, or WLAN standard, which is used in most RIM BlackBerry phones and devices. RIM has argued it has already reached patent licensing agreements with Nokia that should cover the technology in dispute, according to the Wall Street Journal

Both companies are struggling to regain their former positions near the top of the global smartphone market, having been eclipsed in the past three years by sales of Google Android smartphones and Apple’s iPhone.
