In her latest ad, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill takes on special interests by promising to fight “secret money” cropping up in campaigns.

“They just keep coming back,” the narrator begins. “Secret money attacking Claire McCaskill. These big oil and insurance companies don’t want you to know who they are.”  The ad says companies funding anonymous attacks want to “end Medicare as we know it, cut student loans and continue subsidies to big oil. “But Claire McCaskill will fight them. Always has, always will.”

The ad is in line with McCaskill’s general strategy to undercut the outside spending flooding her state. In late April, independent conservative groups had already spent $3 million on TV and radio ads against McCaskill.

As McCaskill told the Washington Post in April:

“You make one company mad by casting a principled vote, and they say, ‘Okay, we’ll just gin up $10 million of our corporate money and take her out anonymously,’ ” she said. “I think if people figure out that’s what’s going on, they’re going to be very turned off by it.”

The McCaskill campaign put $300,000 into the latest ad, which will air statewide.
