Two environmental groups have sued the state of New Jersey following Gov. Chris Christie’s decision to pull out from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) last year. The Natural Resources Defense Council and Environment New Jersey have taken the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to court, arguing that New Jersey’s withdrawal from the carbon trading system was illegal, as the Christie administration failed to notify the public. Christie has expressed doubts about the program’s effectiveness, maintaining that the state’s increased use of natural gas and decreased use of coal are lowering emissions regardless.
